Introducing E-MAG

E-Mag is a next-generation electronic ignition, designed to serve as an upgrade or replacement for traditional aircraft engine magnetos.  The idea behind a next-generation "anything" is that it 1) builds on what came before, and 2) gives more of what the customer wants.  

What Does The Customer Want? 

Reliability, performance, economy, and convenience is a short and familiar list.  The challenge for designers is getting all these features into a single package.  It's rare when a single modification can:

  • Benefit so many areas (reliability, performance, economy, convenience).
  • Require so little investment.
  • Require so little time.  

What Came Before? 

Automobiles have used electronic ignitions for decades.  Most of us have experienced worn-out car tires, batteries, brakes, etc.  But have you ever worn out you car's electronic ignition?  Likely not.  Alternatively, when did you last pull your magnetos for inspection/repair/replacement?  How many hours until your next magneto appointment?  Even so, the automotive analogy has limits.  Auto ignitions evolved to serve different types of engines.  Fortunately, aircraft ignitions are undergoing a similar evolution, one that's oriented to their unique environment and engine-specific needs.  

The basic goals of electronic ignition are very straight forward, and most "first-generation" aircraft ignitions do provide:  

  • Stronger Spark - Electronic ignitions deliver greater energy, allowing spark plug gaps to be set much wider.  The result is a hotter, longer length, and longer duration spark.    
  • Variable Timing - Variable spark timing improves efficiency over a wider range of operating speeds and conditions. Smoother idle, efficient cruise, etc.
  • Multi-Strike Start - High-energy multi-strike start mode helps overcome a variety of start-up challenges (cold engine, low battery, poor mixture, oily plugs, etc.).  
  • Fewer Moving Parts - Parts that don’t exist don't wear out. 

What's Missing?

So what does a "next-generation" ignition need to do different?  What else does the customer want?  The answer from the marketplace appears to be - quite a lot, and is evidenced by the simple fact that electronic ignitions are not  today's "standard" ignition, as we believe they should be.  The advantages are simply too compelling.  

The reasons for market reticence are varied, but easy to identify and understand.  More importantly, they tell us exactly what a next-generation ignition needs to do (better).  E-MAG addresses not one or two, but a broad range of such issues.  In doing so, E-MAG is setting new standards for the next-generation of electronic ignitions.

What's New 

 

 Alert: Possible Parts Shortages 

We currently have adequate supplies, but warehouse stocks of certain electronic parts are running low.  Manufacturing delays possible later this summer. (more)

 

  "P" Only

We no longer offer "E" type ignitions (models without the built-in alternator).  Customers have been telling us that for the negligible (4oz.) difference in weight and the small difference in price, they prefer the comfort of our P model (with built-in back-up alternator).

 

  Addl. 4-6 HP

One of our larger engine shop customers (Eagle Engines) reports they typically see an additional four to six hp. after installing an E-MAG system.

  Maturing

We're pleased to note there have been no changes (updates) to current firmware, hardware, or circuit board since Sept 2008 (roughly 2 years) (more)
