Brad and Tom,
I just wanted to give you a 4 year pirep on my
Emag/Pmag equipped RV-9A. I have 48 months, 725 hours on the
plane and the 113 Series EMag Ignitions now, and I can tell you they have
never missed a beat. There were some initial growing pains - the units
have been back to the to the factory for a software upgrade as a
precaution, but now, they just seem to get better with age. I really appreciate that
you have always been there to answer questions along the way.
We have been to Montana, Pennsylvania and all points in between
in the plane, taking vacations, visiting colleges and rescuing over 15
dogs thru Pilots n' Paws. Along the way, we have surprised pilots used to
starting with mags with 'amazing' 1-2 blade starts and even more
pilots with low fuel flows. I run a carb with a constant
speed prop and have found by using carb heat, smooth Lean of Peak EGT
operations are possible with my ECI O-320. This results in a cool
running, cleaner burning engine that rivals economy cars in mileage, and
stock cars in speed (29mpg at 175+mph!!). I plan (and get) 150KTAS
on 6gph at 7500ft or higher for XC flights. My favorite example of
this was our trip from Bozeman, MT to Minne this summer where we came home
direct, ~760nm in 5hrs, burning 26 gallons. We landed with 10
gallons in the tank.
I run auto plugs at $2.50 each - 'nuff said. They get replaced
every annual whether they need it or not - the $20 buys peace of
mind. I also geeked out and used a PC in the cockpit to custom tune
the ignitions with my own advance curve. This is not for
everyone, and certainly not required, but it is there if you like to
"optimize" things.
Finally, only because I like to justify things, I
figure that at 725 hours, saving a gallon + an hour over mags, at 4 bucks
a gallon, I've saved $2900 over magnetos. Thanks for a nice
system!
Cheers,
Pete
